To achieve a flat subfloor, our Floor Levelling team uses primer coatings followed by a Self Levelling Compound. The Floor Preparation starts by ensuring the surface is clean and free of any contaminants. Secondly, mechanical bonding for long-term adhesion is achieved by the use of highly penetrating primers and high-quality products.

The peaks and valleys created by profiling the concrete provide an anchor to which the floor topping can bond. These Cementitious-Based Compounds are smooth in texture and the high fluidity allows ease of placement, trowelling, feathering and finish. Suitable for tiles, carpet, vinyl, parquetry, timber floors and rain-damaged concrete refurbishment.

The Self Levelling Compound can be hand mixed and applied by Hippo Mixer, Wolff Mixer, Putzmeister pump and more. The pump-applied method mechanically mixes the material and allows the product to be pumped more than 60m across a floor. The flow is easily adjusted.

Is Concrete Grinding Required Before Floor Levelling?

Yes, Concrete grinding is ALWAYS required before floor levelling otherwise you WILL NOT get ANY insurance on the installation of our product as it’s most likely going to fail, crack, or popup within a 6-12 month period due to “Floor Preparation not being done correctly”

You may also require concrete grinding before floor levelling proceeds if you have previously had flooring systems or coatings such as paint, epoxy, waterproofing, magnesite, stencil concrete, vinyl, lino, tiles, slate, or glued carpet floors. etc. Installed that may have been glued or cemented down to your concrete slab as they will have left a residue that will need to be ground away.

This will prevent the floor levelling agent from bonding correctly with your concrete slab. So you must grind back any glues, residues, cement, etc. To ensure that your new floor levelling agent will not fail after installation.

Is There Magnesite Flooring In Your Property?

If your home was built in the 1920s 1980s, likely, your home (Especially unit blocks in NSW) could potentially have Magnesite Flooring. Magnesite is present below a flooring system such as carpet. Magnesite is a product used as a noise preventative and a Floor Levelling agent.

Magnesite Flooring absorbs moisture (particularly in areas prone to moisture such as external walls, doorways, around shower recesses, near windows, laundries, etc.) Unfortunately, once Magnesite Flooring absorbs moisture, it starts a chemical reaction that will cause Concrete Cancer over long periods of time.

Because your Magnesite Flooring was laid 40 – 100 years ago, it has likely absorbed moisture over the many decades that it has been trapped under your flooring system, and it has most likely started to break down and lose its strength, making it an unsuitable Floor Levelling product that it once was, as well as very hollow, which destroys its soundproofing.

The best thing you can do to prevent further damage to your property and the concrete slab is to remove it ASAP. Magnesite Flooring consists of Magnesium Oxychloride, which may contain ASBESTOS.

Since it is a health hazard and a major safety risk in NSW, if you remove your flooring system and find out there is Magnesite under it.

YOU MUST remove your Magnesite Flooring for the safety of you and everyone else in your unit block.

Strata may pay to remove your Magnesite Flooring as it is considered “Common property”. Magnesite Flooring can cause Concrete Cancer, which is a major risk to everyone’s safety as well as the successful reinstallation of your new flooring system.

NO company will give you any form of warranty or insurance on any flooring installation job on a magnesite floor, which is another reason why it should always be removed.

Why Is It Dangerous To Skip Floor Levelling?

If your subfloor is not level, it can lead to flooring systems failing within a short period, or simply not being able to be installed at all, you will also not receive your warranty, and often no company will take on these jobs. Almost all flooring systems have guidelines that must be followed to correctly install the flooring system. Floor Levelling is an important part of the flooring installation process.

– The cost to prepare your subfloor for your new flooring system is fairly cheap.
– Skipping this process is a recipe for disaster and is extremely expensive.

It is far cheaper to prepare your subfloor correctly the first time before the installation of a new flooring system rather than skipping the process and purchasing your flooring system and installing it, only to have it fail within a short time.
This will cause the following:

1) You must hire a demolition company to come out to remove and dispose of the failed flooring system
2) You must purchase your new flooring system again
3) You must actually, pay to prepare the subfloor correctly this time
4) You must pay the re-installation fee for your flooring systemLiquid Flowing Screed - Floor Levelling Sydney - 3

Why Do I Need Floor Levelling?

New concrete slabs are laid to Australian standards which specify a 10mm maximum tolerance within any room and a 20mm maximum tolerance over the entire building footprint.

This makes Floor Levelling an important key to your renovation project as many concrete slabs have a variance of height exceeding the maximum recommended tolerance for laying a large range of flooring systems.

A large portion of people who install new flooring in their homes or commercial buildings fail to inspect the levelling of their concrete subfloor, which almost always leaves their floors with subtle errors and dips. Before installing your new flooring system, always ensure that correct floor preparation is undertaken before the installation of a new flooring system.

Floor Levelling may not seem like an important step when putting in new flooring. However, the concrete that acts as a base for your flooring can often have high or low points which means your concrete isn’t completely smooth and level. High points can be caused by concrete spills, contamination, and original pour errors as well. Low points can be frettings, divets, holes, and other damage such as Concrete Cancer and Concrete Cracks.

With Floor Levelling Sydney’s specialist team, we can fix any of these issues such as the raising or lowering of concrete height to accommodate these high or low points. Our Floor Levelling team is also able to create falls in the concrete slab for water-proofing purposes or to direct drains. As well as any other Floor Levelling service that you can think of that may be required before installing your flooring system, such as an Ardex Skim Coat or a Liquid Screed.

What Is Floor Preparation?

What is Floor Preparation? Floor preparation is the process of preparing the existing concrete slab or timber subfloor to receive a new flooring system or coating while ensuring that your new flooring or coating will look great, lay flat, stay bonded, and not fail for many years to come.

You cannot skip proper Floor Preparation. Every surface needs to be clean, level, free of existing adhesives, and within moisture tolerances, for the type of flooring or coating that you will be installing.

Floor Preparation on Concrete Subfloors is the process of using Concrete Grinders to reduce the size of humps (high spots) in Concrete Slabs and a Floor Levelling Compound to fill in the low areas. This is done primarily to prepare the concrete slab for laying floor coverings with minimal tolerances.

Floor preparation on Timber Subfloors is also the process of Sanding Timber Subfloors to remove any residue that may be left from previous flooring systems. The Timber subfloor is then primed before the use of Floor Levelling Compounds to fill in the low areas to allow the successful installation of a new flooring system.

Can You Level Uneven Concrete Slabs?

Yes, you can Level uneven concrete slabs. Floor Levelling is an easy fix that won’t sacrifice your headroom. The easiest way is to use a Self Leveling Compound, also called liquid floor underlayment or floor resurfacer, within sections of level-cut rails.
Floor Levelling Sydney - Ardex Feather Coat

Can You Level Over Tiles?

Short Answer: Yes, you can level over tiles, although:

It is NEVER recommended to level over tiles.

It is POSSIBLEthough, but you will get no warranty and no insurance, and there is a far greater chance that it will fail even when using the correct product and preparing the tiles correctly, it still has a far higher chance of failure, causing your new flooring system to fail. This will require your new flooring system to be ripped up, and the whole process will have to be restarted again—wasting thousands of dollars (if not tens of thousands of dollars), depending on the size of your property.

Self-levelling concrete is a polymer-modified cement that has high flow characteristics, it’s used in the preparation of laying most floor coverings to create a smooth and level surface. Floor Levelling compound can be used on a variety of substrates including concrete, screed, existing tiles, and timber floors. Floor Levelling compounds are Ideal for use in areas where the floor dips, requires fillings of holes or where it is not level.

There are appropriate products out there, designed to be used on top of tiles, such as “ARDEX K 15” although that does not guarantee any promises. The tiles underneath may slowly delaminate and de-attach from the floor, pushing up the Floor Levelling compound, causing your new flooring system to fail and require removal.

How Do I Make Sure My Subfloor Is Level?

When it comes to testing the evenness of your subfloor, we recommend using a long spirit leveller of at least one metre in length. This allows you to check for bumps, dips and other uneven areas, whilst also providing how many millimetres of height difference over every metre.

Ardex - Floor Levelling Compound - Wood Subfloors

Can Floor Levelling Compounds Be Used On Surfaces Other Than Concrete Slabs?

Yes, there is a large range of Ardex Floor Levelling products available, suited for a variety of different subfloors, such as:

1) Concrete
2) Wood and Timber
3) Tiles
4) Particleboard
5) Plywood

Self-Levelling Compounds can be used on almost every surface. The application method varies, depending on whether the subfloor is a concrete slab or wooden base. Properly sealed concrete slabs only require a primer before a self-leveller can be poured over, whereas a wood substrate needs waterproofing and sealing as well.

A self-levelling compound cannot be applied over existing floating floors. We highly recommend removing and disposing of any existing floor coverings in advance.

The following subfloors don’t always require waterproofing (may require sealing):

– Concrete Slab
– Ceramic, Porcelain and Travertine Tiles
– Aerated Concrete e.g Hebel Flooring

These wood-based subfloors ALWAYS require waterproofing and sealing. This is a non-exhaustive list:

– Solid Timber Flooring
– Wooden Sheets i.e Plywood, Masonite, Particleboard
– Yellow Tongue Flooring
– Cork Flooring (May be more suitable to remove if there is concrete beneath)

Exceptions that may not be suitable for levelling:

– Self-levelling compounds should NEVER be used on top of Magnesite Flooring

Is Concrete Grinding Dangerous?

Yes, Concrete Grinding is dangerous.

Concrete Grinding without the correct PPE and power tools/equipment will create a harmful silica dust environment. It’s also possible to be injured by tools as well as injured from the Concrete Grinding process.

– SERIOUS INJURIES: Sometimes, Tiny pieces of Concrete can go flying in the air during the Concrete Grinding process. Pieces of concrete can accidentally hit your eye, causing serious damage, if not blindness. The tools required to perform this task are also dangerous to use for people who are not highly skilled in using these tools.

– ACCIDENTAL INJURIES: It’s easy to look up a guide on what tools to use, but injuries often occur from a lack of knowledge of how to use these tools safely.

– PERMANENT LUNG DAMAGE: Inhaling dangerous silica dust by not using the correct PPE and Dust Extractors can be deadly.

The longer silicosis goes without treatment, the more likely it is to develop a complication. Because the disease affects the immune system, silicosis patients are vulnerable to developing tuberculosis, lung cancer, COPD, and kidney disease.

    • Lung Cancer.
    • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
    • Kidney Disease.
    • Autoimmune Disease.

Breathing in very small (“respirable”) crystalline silica particles causes multiple diseases, including silicosis, an incurable lung disease that leads to disability and death. Respirable crystalline silica also causes lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and kidney disease.

Yes, Floor Levelling can be a difficult and time-consuming project and the challenges often remain hidden until the project is underway.

If you have a Floor Levelling job that is over 10 square metres, it is considered a hard task, that will be expensive and frustrating to attempt to do yourself. It’s often cheaper to hire a Floor Levelling contractor than to hire the tools, PPE, and other equipment required to attempt the project yourself.

How Do I Work Out How Much My Job Will Cost?

How To Use A Square Metre CalculatorA square metre calculator is very simple to use. To calculate square meters, you need to know the length and width of each area (Floor plans or manual measuring can help with this). This is also referred to as the area of the shape; most commonly, it’s a simple square or rectangle, but for more advanced areas, it can be harder and different shapes.

Square metres are calculated by Length x Width
For example 1 x 1 = 1 square metre
For example 7 x 4 = 28 square metres
For example 14 x 1 = 14 Square Metres

Or you can simply email Carpet Removal Sydney your “Floor Plan” to make it easier for you. We will calculate the square metres for you, but sometimes a Floor Plan may be missing measurements (most commonly the hallways), so those may need to be manually measured, or we may need to “guess” the rough measurement of that area.
Here is an example of a floor plan sent to us with “Missing Measurements.”

How to Calculate Square Meters

You might find yourself needing the area of a room or other space in square meters for a flooring, renovation, or landscaping project. To obtain such a measurement, you can measure the area of the space in square meters in a few simple steps. Follow along to learn how to calculate it yourself, or simply use the calculator above.

Step One: Measure Length and Width

In order to calculate the area of a space, you must know its dimensions. For example, if the shape of the space is a square or rectangle, then start by measuring the length and width of the space in meters using a tape measure or other measuring tool.

If your measurements are in another unit of measure, centimetres, for example, then you can either convert them to meters first, or you can find the area in another unit and convert them to square meters. We have some simple area conversion utilities, or you can convert yourself. If your length measurements are in centimetres, then divide by 100 to get meters.

If your area measurement is in square centimetres, then divide by 10,000 to get square meters.

If your space is not a square or rectangle, you may need to use a formula to calculate the area of a different shape. Or continue reading to see how to measure the area of oddly shaped rooms.

Step Two: Multiply Measurements Together

Once you have your measurements in meters, you can use the appropriate formula to calculate the area of the space in square meters. Continuing the example above for the square or rectangular room, now that you have a length and width measurement, you can find the area in square meters by multiplying the length and width together.

square meters = length × width

Measuring Oddly Shaped Rooms

Often, you’ll need to measure a space that’s not a perfect rectangle. It might be easiest to try to split up oddly shaped areas into separate shapes and measure the square meters of each of them separately.

Once that is complete, add up the individually calculated areas to find the total area of the space. You’ll also find that the formula above works great for rectangular areas. For other shapes, try our area calculator.

For example, see the formula below to see how to add two individually calculated areas of a complex space together.

total square meters = area 1 + area 2

FAQ’s

Are Square Metres and Metres The Same Thing?

No, square meters are a two-dimensional unit of area, whereas meters are a one-dimensional unit of length.

What Does 1 Square Metre Look Like?

One square meter is equal to a square that is 1 meter in width by 1 meter in height. For visual reference, a guitar is about 1 meter in length, so 1 square meter is approximately the area inside of a square made with guitars for edges.

Are Square Metres and Metres The Same Thing?

You can use square meters anytime you wish to know the area of space. Square meters are typically used for flooring, landscaping, and agricultural purposes.

How Many Square Metres Is A 10 x 10 Room?

A 10 m x 10 m room has an area of exactly 100 square meters, as shown by:
10 m × 10 m = 100 sq m

How Many Square Metres Is A 9 x 3 Room?

A 9 m x 3 m room has an area of exactly 27 square meters, as shown by:
9 m × 3 m = 127 sq m

What Does “Per Square Metre” Mean?

“Per square meter” is used whenever you are dividing some quantity by a total area, measured in square meters, for instance, to find a unit price. For example, if you want to resurface a 60 square meter lounge room and the total cost is $3,000, then the price per square meter is $50, as shown by:

$3,000 / 60 Square Metres = $50 per square meter
$3,000 divided by 60 Square Metres = $50 / Per Square Metre

Do I Need To Turn Off My Air-con And Fire Alarms?

Yes, While we are grinding your concrete and levelling your floors, we do try to keep the dust to an absolute minimum through various methods such as dust extraction units. But Dust still may occur, so it is important that you turn off air conditioning units as well as isolate, switch off and cover your fire alarms as dust will set them off.

Ardex Floor Levelling

Ardex Floor Levelling In Sydney is our specialty our Floor Levelling specialist team will ensure that your concrete surface is completely level when your new floor covering is installed to ensure that it can be installed correctly without failure.

A large portion of people who install new flooring in their homes or commercial buildings fail to inspect the Levelling of their concrete and timber subfloor, which almost always leaves their floors with subtle errors and dips. Before installing your new flooring system, always ensure that correct floor preparation is undertaken before the installation of carpet, vinyl, tiles, floorboards, etc.

Floor Levelling Sydney has over 35 years of experience in the floor preparation industry, our specialist team can inspect your concrete surface and level the slab if necessary. This will provide you with the best possible outcome once your floor covering has been installed.

Floor Levelling may not seem like an important step when putting in new flooring. However, the concrete that acts as a base for your flooring can often have high or low points which means your concrete isn’t completely smooth. High points can be caused by concrete spills, contamination, and original pour errors as well. Low points can be frettings, divets, holes, and other damage such as Concrete Cancer and Concrete Spalling.

Why Is Floor Leveling Important?

Floor Leveling is important for a large number of reasons. This is a small list (just to name a few)

Preparation is key when it comes to Floor Levelling and this is what sets us apart.

Having a solid substrate is critical.

Loose or crumbling substrates cause Floor Levelling product failure.

All our concrete floors are ground before installation to ensure we remove any loose particles or flaking concrete.

The Concrete Grinding opens the pores of the concrete to ensure maximum adhesion to the concrete substrate is achieved.

All of our Concrete Grinders and dust extraction equipment are state of the art, to ensure that fantastic results can be achieved with minimal fuss.

All of our vacuum cleaners & dust extraction equipment meets and exceeds all relevant Australian safety standards ensuring the highest safety standards to protect the operator and the environment. In particular air filtration, dust containments and disposal systems prevent any form of pollution.

– Floor Levelling over existing timber or tiles is possible given the right preparation.

All floors are primed before installation of the Floor Levelling compound to ensure exceptional results every time.

We level your subfloor using the highest quality priming and Self-Leveling products, removing dips and humps to leave a smooth, even base on which your new floor can be installed.

Ardex
– And more!

Primers are used for pre-treating floors and are often applied before Floor Levelling materials or floor adhesives, to create a base and assure good bonding of upper floor layers. What Is A Liquid Screed?

Ardit Liquid Flowing Screeds are a blend of a binder, special additives, and aggregates, mixed with water to produce a Self Leveling, flowing Screed which can be accurately pumped into place. Liquid Screeds are designed to provide a smooth, level surface before the application of floor finishes or to be polished, ideal for both commercial and domestic buildings. Liquid Flowing Screeds can be used bonded, unbonded, or floating and with or without underfloor heating.

Liquid Screeds have great thermal conductivity and can help spread underfloor heating across the floor, making the build more energy efficient. Easier to level, Liquid Screeds can be set to thin or thick, meaning fewer resources are used and, again, less energy is required during production.

Liquid Screeds Are Best for Extra Strength and Higher Depths
When dealing with floor depths more than 75mm, or for structural floors, Liquid Screeds can recommend the use of a cement-based Liquid Screed solution which can be pumped applied, and laser levelled for a precise floor finish. Sometimes referred to as flowing concrete, this solution can eliminate the need to power float concrete on site, dependent on project specification.

– Bonded liquid screed thickness minimum would be 15mm

– Bonded liquid screed thickness maximum would be 80mm for the specialist version and 80mm for the standard.

What Is Ardit & Ardex?

Dunlop Ardit Floor Leveller is a high-quality Levelling Cement with superior qualities of flow and workability.

Suitable for indoor and outdoor use, Dunlop Ardit Floor Leveller is used before the installation of most types of floor coverings including tiles, slate carpet, vinyl, lino, floorboards, ETC.

A high-performance cement-based Floor Leveller with Ardit Technology that creates a smooth even finish before applying floor coverings There is a huge range of Dunlop Ardit products for every different scenario in the Floor Preparation world.

Ardex also produces a large range of products similar to Ardit for a large range of Floor Levelling needs.

In the category of Self-Leveling Concrete, there are two main groups of materials: underlayments and toppings. Underlayment is installed over an existing subfloor to smooth it out and correct any surface irregularities before the installation of all types of floor coverings, including Vinyl, Lino, Tiles, Wood, Carpet, and more.

Liquid Flowing Screed - Ardex - Floor Levelling Sydney - 19

A topping performs a similar function but acts as the actual finished floor without the need for a floor covering. Some typical applications for concrete toppings include warehouse floors, light industrial applications, retail stores, and institutional facilities. Concrete toppings can also receive colour, stains, saw cuts, or mechanical polishing to produce a decorative concrete finished wear surface.

Most Self-Leveling Compounds are cement-based mixtures that are poured onto the floor and spread with a trowel or spreader. Some industrial compounds are water-based, latex-based, or two-part epoxy resins. Each product has its range of features and is designed for particular applications.

The method of installation depends on the properties of the compound and the condition of the floor. Set out below is the general installation procedure for a typical cement-based underlayment.

Without proper Floor Preparation, many problems can arise once you’ve installed your new flooring or coating. If you have ever seen:

– Failing Flooring systems
– Uneven Floors
– Floors that creek when walked on
– Floor Coverings that peel up
– Concrete Coatings that peel up
– Coatings Bubbling and Delaminating

You will notice that the correct Floor Preparation needs were not met before the installation of the new flooring system or coating resulting in it failing which will also mean that insurance will not cover the costs as you did not install the product to their specifications.

Why Is Surface Preparation Required Before Floor Levelling?

Surface Preparation is the essential first stage treatment of a steel substrate before the application of any coating (Including Floor Levelling), and is generally accepted as being the most important factor affecting the total success of a corrosion protection system.

Surface Preparation is extremely important when it comes to Floor Levelling. Floor Levelling agents will fail if proper Surface Preparation has not been done. Concrete Grinding or Floor Sanding must be done before installing Floor Levelling products.

Proper Surface Preparation ensures the longevity of your project. A poorly prepared surface, on the other hand, can result in costly repairs and your project failing altogether.

Surface Preparation should include:
– Removal of the current flooring system or coating
Concrete Grinding or Floor Sanding (Depending on your subfloor)
– Performing any repairs necessary such as Concrete Cancer Repairs or Application of Waterproof Membranes
– Installation of a Floor Levelling product

After this process, you are now ready to install a new flooring system!

What Is A Feather Coat?Ardex - Feather Coat - Floor Levelling Sydney

ARDEX Feather Finish is a cement-based smoothing compound designed to provide a smooth, permanent finish to a variety of internal substrates before the installation of floor coverings such as vinyl, carpet, ceramic tile, and sheet timber (plywood, and particleboard).

A Standard Feather Coat is a thin layer of a Floor Levelling compound that is 0.1mm  3mm thick and troweled over the entire floor to ensure a smooth finish.

It can be used as a skim coat on closely fitted fibre-cement underlay and sheet timber to fill in grooves, and gouges and to level up joints. Before the installation of floor coverings.Ardex Skim Coat - Floor Levelling Sydney

How To Level Floors?

The easiest way to Level A Floor involves using a Self-Leveling Compound, which uses gravity to smooth out any dips in the subfloor. If you need to know How To Level A Floor without Leveling Compounds to fix structural issues, it can be more difficult.

Self-Levelling Concrete

Self-Levelling Concrete is a polymer-modified cement. This form of modified concrete is smooth, with high fluidity allowing ease of placement, trowelling, feathering, and finish, making it suitable as a base for tiles, carpet, vinyl, parquetry, timber flooring, or as a stylish floor in its own right.

Concrete Grinding is required ahead of Self-Levelling Concrete if you have previously had paint, epoxy, waterproofing, magnesite, vinyl, lino, tiles, or glued carpet floors.

Self-Levelling Concrete can be a fast, cost-effective solution to the problem whenever you need to repair, smooth, or raise a floor.

Self-Levelling Concrete is a cementitious mixture much like concrete. But unlike concrete, it flows easier and sets up much faster. The product is mixed with water, pumped or poured into place, and spread evenly with a gauge rake. Once it’s spread out, it continues to flow evenly and levels itself out

The term Self-Levelling Concrete was coined in the United States by ARDEX, Inc. in 1978 in reference to their first Self-Levelling product, ARDEX K 15 Premium Self-Levelling Concrete Underlayment. The term was used to differentiate it from traditional concrete, which is typically stiffer and requires more labour to get into place and finish with a trowel.

Self-Levelling Concrete has high flow characteristics and, in contrast to traditional concrete, does not require the addition of excessive amounts of water for placement. Self-Levelling Concrete is typically used to create a flat and smooth surface with a compressive strength similar to or higher than that of traditional concrete before installing interior floor coverings.

You can pour Self Levelling Concrete or Self-Leveling Overlays over concrete surfaces you didn’t think were salvageable, saving time and money. It’s faster and easier than pouring new concrete

Self-Levelling Concrete has increased in popularity as the need to replace old systems such as Magnesite Flooring has become more and more urgent because Magnesite damages the concrete slab and can cause Concrete Cancer.

Depending on the product, it may be smooth and flat within 1-2 hours.

In about 6 hours, it may be completely hardened and ready for use.

Depending on the flooring material being installed on top. Self-Levelling Concrete can be used as an underlayment for tile, carpet, or other floor coverings. Self-Leveling Concrete can be poured as thin as a quarter of an inch, just enough to smooth out small imperfections if that’s all you need. But if the concrete floor has low spots and needs to be smoothed, even more, it can be poured as thick as an inch and a half without adding aggregate and 5 inches with the addition of aggregate (though make sure you follow all manufacturer’s guidelines).

Self-Leveling Concrete works especially well with radiant heating installations because it easily flows around the tubing. The thicker Floor Leveling Compounds that must be troweled to achieve a proper finish can’t do this.

Self-Levelling Concrete is a compound that can be used on a concrete slab or a wood subfloor and can be effective with any dips in the floor. These Self-Levelling Compounds are similar to concrete and typically come in large bags of powder. The powder should be mixed with water to create a thick paste, and you can spread it over the floor and it will automatically level out in the effective areas. But may also need to be raked into areas.Floor Levelling Sydney - Ardex Self Levelling Concrete - 2

What Is A Traditional Screed?

A Traditional Floor Screed consists of cement and sharp sand, but where a more industrial version is required, coarse aggregates can be added to create a thicker layer. It may be applied onto either a solid in-situ concrete ground floor slab or a precast concrete floor unit.

Also known as Sand and Cement Screed or Dry Floor Screed. Suitable for all applications that are to receive a floor finish, Traditional Screed is a cost-effective choice for floor leveling.

Traditional Floor Screeds are most commonly used to provide a sturdy, level foundation for a decorative floor covering of your choice. Although many people choose to cover the Screed with carpets, wooden flooring, and tiles, it can also be left bare – acting as a final floor finish.

What Is An Underfloor Heating System?

Ardex Liquid Flowing Screed - Floor Levelling Sydney - Underfloor Heating

Underfloor Heating Systems work by distributing a lower temperature of warm water through a circuit of pipes beneath the finished floor. Concrete has a high thermal mass meaning it will store and distribute heat extremely well. Heat is monitored and controlled by intelligent thermostats to maintain a consistent temperature throughout the property or individual zones. Any heat source can be used including conventional boilers and renewable ground/air heat source pumps.

Underfloor Heating Systems will ensure your rooms will stay warm for longer after your heating is switched off than would be the case with a traditional heating system. For this to be consistently effective we either recommend our in-slab or in-screed systems. These systems can be used for a full slab.

Floor Levelling products are poured on top of the Underfloor Heating Systems to ensure the concrete is at the correct height while protecting the Underfloor Heating System.

Some other benefits of using Underfloor Heating are:

Improved heat distribution – As the heating system is underneath the entire floor, if it is well planned and installed, heat will be nicely and evenly distributed throughout the home. This will keep your feet warm all year round and take the chill off the cold concrete.

Interior design – With no need for traditional heaters like radiators, a minimalist design is created offering a high-end, luxurious look. As no space restrictions are created, the design of the home remains non-impacted. No radiators, grills, or vents that can become visibly dirty are on display. Everything related to the heating is below the floor.

Cost-effective – Although the outlay may be expensive with installation costs, in the long run, underfloor heating is highly cost-effective. heating bills will be lower, therefore, saving you money.

Comfort – Temperature can be adjusted depending on preference and time of year. Concrete’s thermal mass also allows you to reduce the temperature, creating a cooler home when desired. All of this can provide you with high levels of comfort while consuming significantly less energy. It’s also a win-win for the environment.

Quietness – Traditional heating systems, including radiators, often tend to grunt and groan as they work. Underfloor heating systems are quite the opposite and are generally quieter. Your home will become noticeably silent, filled simply with pure luxurious warmth.

Health and safety – Underfloor heating is both child and pet-safe. No flames or hot surfaces will be exposed within your home, providing you with less worry about a chance of an individual being burned or hurt.

There is no doubt that underfloor heating provides the safest, cleanest, and most luxurious heat available. It is hidden away and does not impede the design of a room or house. Simply pure luxurious warmth.

How Does Floor Levelling Help With Pipes, Cables, And Drains?

Floor Levelling products can be used when installing pipes or cables beneath the ground. They allow workers to accurately map out where elements should go without digging too deep into the earth.

Floor Levelling also helps mark the regions for earthworks, such as drainage trenches in Australia or other countries worldwide. This helps ensure that no part of a build gets left behind during execution. In addition, it allows workers to quickly identify potential weak spots before they set out on the job.

It is far cheaper to prepare your subfloor correctly the first time before the installation of a new flooring system rather than skipping the process and purchasing your flooring system and installing it, only to have it fail within a short period of time.
This will cause the following:

– You must hire a demolition company to come out to remove and dispose of the failed flooring system
– You must purchase your new flooring system again
– You must actually, pay to prepare the subfloor correctly this time
– You must pay the re-installation fee for your flooring system

Should I Get My Floors Leveled?

Concrete passes all of the tests for durability and load capability. But over time, little things might cause it to sag or not be level. While you might not notice right away, this unlevel floor could become a hazard.

When it comes to construction projects accurate Floor Levelling can ensure that floors are perfectly straight and true-to-level. Floor Levelling also ensures that foundations are laid properly and evenly, so any structure or flooring system built on top won’t suffer instability issues later on.

Floor Levelling can easily create smooth, flat, and even surfaces within a day. It can dry quickly and offers greater compressive strength. This is one of the reasons why concrete surfaces are considered one of the best. They are durable, strong, and long-lasting.

How Does Floor Levelling Work?

Floor Levelling is a method used to measure levels or points on an area or surface. For example, it’s used to determine height differences between two points, usually with the help of a laser level or spirit level. A laser level displays varying heights by reflecting a beam off a laser receiver.

There is also the option of using a spirit leveller (the longer, the better) and laying it on the floor. Look to see whether the bubble is central. You can measure your slope by lifting the spirit level until the bubble is central and then measuring the gap between the level and the floor.

The process is then followed up by the use of a concrete grinder to reduce the size of bumps (high spots) in concrete slabs and using a Floor Leveling compound to fill in the low areas. This is done primarily to prepare the slab for laying floor coverings with minimal tolerances.

Why Do You Need Your Floors Leveled?

Floor Levelling may be required as over time concrete can become damaged due to the movement of concrete substrate and other factors such as excessive wear and tear and environmental exposure etc. Concrete Cancer can also develop leaving major issues in your concrete that will require repairs. Floor Levelling also improves a floor’s appearance and creates an even surface to walk on allowing you to install your flooring system as directed by the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Another reason could be that concrete floors are prone to cracking. This may not happen as often, but when it does, it can lead to uneven floor surfaces. Dips, cracks, chipping, and holes may also make your floor look uneven. This is where Floor Levelling comes in!

Do All Flooring Systems Need Floor Levelling Before Installation?

First and foremost, we highly recommend Floor Levelling your uneven subfloor before installing any type of floor cover. The best option for slightly uneven subfloors is using a Floor Levelling agent such as Ardex.

It’s the dictum you always see when you purchase a floor covering: Start with a level subfloor. Whether engineered wood flooring, tile, hardwood, laminate, or vinyl, that floor cover needs to be installed on top of a level subfloor to ensure you get your warranty and manufacturer’s guarantee.

Can You Install Carpet On Uneven Floors?

One way to install flooring on uneven floors is to choose a type of flooring that is naturally flexible. This makes carpet one of the most ideal options: it’s cheap, easy to install, and very attractive. For only slightly uneven flooring, sturdy materials such as luxury vinyl plank can also be used for full coverage.

Laying carpet on top of concrete or uneven boards often requires a good-quality underlay that insulates against dampness and heat loss.

Floor Preparation still may be required, such as removing any existing flooring and making sure that the surface is level and free from debris. If your floor has any cracks or gaps, you should fill them in before installing the carpet. Otherwise, carpet installation can be difficult and may not last as long.

Is Floor Levelling Required For Installing Floating Floorboards?

Floor Levelling With Flooring Underlay – Whilst underlay is necessary for all floating floors, they were never designed to substitute for Self-Leveling Compound or Concrete Grinding. This is because the underlay will simply follow the shape of the subfloor which is not flat.

Underlayment, or “padding” as it’s often called, is the spongy, closed-cell plastic foam sheet that comes in rolls. It is rolled out between the flooring system and the subfloor.

However, as a general rule of thumb, the subfloor should be flat to within 3mm over a 2-meter radius. If the subfloor is not level, it may be necessary to prepare it before installing the floating floor. This can involve using a Floor Levelling compound or a Self-Leveling Screed to even out any high or low spots.

Why Do I Need My Floors Leveled Before Installing Tiles?

Floor Levelling ensures that your tiles do not pop up, crack or fail within a short period. While also following the guidelines of the manufacturers to ensure you receive your warranty.

If your subfloor is not Level, you may not be able to install a new flooring system at all. This is common for almost every single flooring system (excluding carpet)

Floor Levelling ensures all the tiles will lay flat during installation, making the tile job smooth and well-bonded to the subfloor. Also, it’s important to plan the layout of the tile floor to avoid making design mistakes, such as a diagonal line running along the wall that should be parallel.

When it comes to tiles the subfloor must be completely Level. The floor must be flat within 1/8” in 10′ when measured from the high points of the floor. To achieve this, be sure to use the appropriate patch or Self-Levelling Compound (with the same manufacturer’s primer).

If your subfloor is not Level, it can lead to misaligned tiles and flaking grout during installation. This is not ideal for any homeowner who wants a perfectly tiled floor. Therefore, Levelling your concrete floor is a key step before starting any tiling project.

Tiles are very durable and will last for decades when properly installed. Any professional tiler can tell you how important a flat surface is for laying down tiles. If your subfloor is not Level, it can lead to misaligned tiles and flaking grout during installation. This is not ideal for any homeowner who wants a perfectly tiled floor. Therefore, Levelling your concrete floor is a key step before starting any tiling project

Most tiled floors are installed over a concrete substrate, which is the perfect base for a solid bond. However, concrete often features natural bumps, imperfections, or residues from previously removed flooring systems or coatings on its surface. These bumps or residues can lead to an unevenly tiled floor or a tiled floor failing altogether.

The best way to avoid problems like this is to Level your concrete floor before installing tiles. For new floors, utilizing a Self-Leveling Compound will result in a perfectly flat surface, ready for the re-installation of a new flooring system.

For existing concrete floors, you may need to put in a little extra work. Concrete Grinding is often required before Floor Levelling. This will ensure that the starting surface is Level enough for your tiling project and that the Floor Levelling product won’t fail.

Why Do I Need My Floors Leveled Before Installing Vinyl?

To ensure a smooth surface for your new flooring, you’ll need to level out any uneven areas in the existing subfloor by filling them in with a Floor Levelling compound.

Vinyl will suffer from surface imperfections or a poor aesthetic appearance if the floor below is not perfectly smooth and level. It is therefore essential to install a Floor Levelling compound to ensure an integrally sound, smooth, and level substrate for the floor covering.

But, just like with any other permanent product, it’s imperative that the existing floor is clean and dry, in excellent condition, and most importantly, level.

The subfloor must be completely level. The preparation of the subfloor depends on what type of vinyl you are installing. Make sure the subfloor is completely flat. Any unevenness of more than 0.2 mm over a length of 20 cm must be levelled out.

A flat and level floor is key so that the adjoining vinyl plank flooring doesn’t have varying heights. Whether you’ll be installing your Luxury Vinyl Flooring product over wood, tile, or concrete, the different types of subfloors require different types of preparation.

Why Do I Need My Floors Leveled Before Installing Hardwood Flooring?

If you are ready to upgrade the floor coverings in your home, or even if you are installing them for the first time, it is vitally important that the subfloor be level, smooth, and free from blemishes.

This subfloor layer must be stable, solid, flat, and level. If the subfloor is uneven, with dips, ripples, or waves, this irregularity will be telescoped through to the surface floor covering and can even cause the flooring installation to fail.

A Level Hardwood Floor Requires A Level Subfloor. Along with the natural beauty, it’s why we choose it for our floors. Imperfections in the subfloor will transfer to the finished floor in the form of dips, humps, or separated edges. They can be a dangerous tripping hazard and make the finished floor look bad.

Ardex Skim Coat - Floor Levelling Sydney - 17

Why Do I Need My Floors Leveled Before Installing Laminate Flooring?

Laminate flooring on an uneven floor will cause many problems. One of the major problems is loud pops and cracks that will eventually surface when you walk across due to pockets of air beneath the surface as a result of the uneven subfloor.

While laminate tends to be more forgiving of subfloor imperfections compared to other types of flooring, it is still important to level your flooring to avoid future damage if you are installing laminate flooring on an uneven subfloor. A level subfloor ensures a more attractive and long-lasting finish

Correcting uneven subfloors is a common practice in the floor installation process. Before you can even consider installing timber, laminate, or other flooring, you need an even subfloor.

Will I Need Concrete Grinding Service Before Leveling Floors With Self-Levelling Concrete?

YesConcrete Grinding is ALWAYS required before Floor Levelling otherwise you WILL NOT get ANY insurance on the installation of our product as it’s most likely going to fail, crack, or popup within a 6-12 month period due to “Floor Preparation” not been done correctly”

You may also require Concrete Grinding before Floor Levelling proceeds if you have previously had flooring systems such as paint, Epoxy, Waterproofing, Magnesite, Vinyl, Lino, Tiles, Glued Carpets, Glue Residues may have been glued or cemented down to your concrete slab as they will have left a residue that will need to be ground away.

As well as anything else that may be still on your concrete or timber subfloor. This will prevent the Floor Levelling agent from bonding correctly with your concrete slab or timber subfloor. So you must grind back or stand back any glues, residues, cement, etc. To ensure that your new Floor Levelling agent will not fail after installation.

– Loose or crumbling substrates cause Floor Levelling product failure.

– All of our concrete floors are ground before installation to ensure we remove any loose particles or flaking concrete.

– The grinding opens the pores of the concrete to ensure maximum adhesion to the concrete substrate is achieved.

– All our grinding and dust extraction equipment is state of the art to ensure that fantastic results can be achieved with minimal fuss.

– All our vacuum cleaners & dust extraction equipment meet and exceed all relevant Australian safety standards ensuring the highest safety standards to protect the operator and the environment. In particular air filtration, dust containments and disposal systems prevent any form of pollution.

Magnesite Flooring absorbs moisture (particularly in areas prone to moisture such as external walls, doorways, around shower recesses, near windows, laundries, etc.) Unfortunately, once Magnesite Flooring absorbs moisture it starts a chemical reaction that will cause Concrete Cancer over long periods.

Because your Magnesite Flooring was laid 40 – 100 years ago, it has likely absorbed moisture over the many decades that it has been trapped under your flooring system and it has most likely started to break down and lose its strength making it an unsuitable Floor Levelling product that it once was, as well as very hollow, which destroys its soundproofing.

Magnesite Flooring can cause Concrete Cancer which is a major risk to everyone’s safety as well as the successful reinstallation of your new flooring system.

NO company will give you any form of warranty or insurance on any flooring installation job on a magnesite floor, which is another reason why it should always be removed.

Is Floor Levelling Dangerous?

Yes, Floor Levelling is dangerous.

Floor Levelling without the correct PPE and power tools/equipment will create a harmful silica dust environment, it’s also possible to be injured by tools as well as injured from the Floor Levelling process.

– SERIOUS INJURIES: Sometimes Tiny pieces of Concrete can go flying in the air during the Floor Levelling process, this can accidentally hit your eye causing serious damage if not blindness.

Breathing in very small (“respirable”) crystalline silica particles, causes multiple diseases, including silicosis, an incurable lung disease that leads to disability and death. Respirable crystalline silica also causes lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and kidney disease.

Is Floor Levelling Hard?

Yes, Floor Levelling can be a difficult and time-consuming project and the challenges often remain hidden until the project is underway.

If you have a Floor Levelling job that is over 10 square metres, it is considered a hard task, that will be expensive and frustrating to attempt to do yourself. It’s often cheaper to hire a Floor Levelling contractor than to hire the tools, PPE, and other equipment required to attempt the project yourself.

There are several different installation methods. We only recommend attempting Floor Levelling yourself if the project is under 10 square metres and you have the appropriate tools, PPE, and dust extraction equipment.

For jobs over the size of 10 square metres, we ALWAYS recommend leaving it up to the professionals.

Why Do Old Floors Need Floor Levelling?

Having your floor level is an important first step in any flooring installation process. Over time concrete can become damaged due to the movement of concrete substrate and other factors such as excessive wear and tear, and environmental exposure, etc. Concrete Cancer and Concrete Spalling can also develop leaving rust, divots, holes, cracks and other imperfections. A level subfloor will help your new floors last longer and provide a perfect finish.

How best to get the subfloor ready depends on the condition of the subfloor and how it is prepared for floor levelling. Floor Levelling is often required if there are any high/low spots/holes that need to be filled, before installing your new flooring system.

Old Floors Need Floor Levelling because the new flooring system needs to feel level underfoot, not pop up, crack, or fail within a short period. Installation of new flooring systems can fail if you do not follow installation guidelines. Installation guidelines will let you know how flat/level your floor needs to be, to successfully install your flooring system without failure. You will fail to get a warranty on your new flooring system, and most floor installers will refuse to do the job if you refuse to do Floor Levelling before their installation work.

Is Floor Levelling Required
Before I Install A New Flooring System?

Yes, Floor Levelling should always occur before the installation of a new Flooring System. The appropriate Floor Preparation before installing the new Flooring System system is also required.

Why Choose Floor Levelling Sydney Over Our Competitors?

Floor Levelling Sydney - Floor Leveling Sydney 9

Cleaner Floor Levelling

Dust extraction equipment that is plugged directly into the tool will stop dust from spreading throughout your property, especially in hard-to-clean areas.

Floor Levelling Sydney utilizes a Dust-Free Floor Levelling system. Our speciality equipment is top-of-the-line and state-of-the-art. The equipment we use does not require the installation of plastic room containment systems, which sets us apart from other competitors.

The difference shows itself in how our equipment functions. By suctioning the dust directly from the flooring as it is removed, our equipment prevents this dust from ever becoming airborne. Because airborne dust has always been one of the major concerns with Floor Levelling, replacement, and renovation projects, our specialized technology and Dust-Free equipment are cleaner and more environmentally friendly than traditional Floor Levelling.
Floor Levelling Sydney - Floor Leveling Sydney 17

Faster Floor Levelling

Our equipment is also faster and stronger than other Floor Levelling companies. Our equipment is stronger and more durable than other Floor Levelling tools and technologies, which means the actual work goes faster.

Cleanup after the Floor Levelling is also a breeze. The lack of airborne dust and debris means projects can move forward in less time, bringing our clients into the installation phase of their renovation. Our equipment also leaves behind a flatter and cleaner subsurface. This means there is less preparation work needed on the actual concrete base material before the new coating can be installed.

TESTIMONIALS

Carpet Removal Sydney (Testimonial #10)

“I was shocked when I had realised that my daughter had spilled my paint set all over my new carpet in my rental property, had no idea what to do, everything I tried failed, gave Carpet Removal Sydney a quick call and they gave me free advice over the phone, with no charge that actually worked! Thank you so much!”

Ava Wright, Northern Beaches Resident
“He has great product knowledge and took the time to thoroughly explain the differences of each carpet in a simple way. He has a very personable manner and is very friendly and polite. He explained the process well provided a competitive quote. He was flexible with the install date (as I had some other trades finishing off work before the carpet could be installed) and worked with me to secure a date that suited both parties. I had an issue with the underlay requirements due to strata laws and Declan was very helpful in helping me source the correct underlay to meet strata requirements. I believe he went over and above his role to assist me. The floors are amazing! I’m extremely happy with the choice and the whole process. Thank you Declan. I hope Carpet Removal Sydney realise what an asset you are to their team. ”
Levi Edwards, Home Owner
Carpet Removal Sydney (Testimonial #2)

“The boys at Carpet Removal Sydney went out of their way to help me so much as I wasn’t able to move a lot of the furniture myself as my back isn’t great. I also saved over $400 getting the carpet removed by these guys! Would recommend, thanks again!”

Andy Jones, Property Investor
Carpet Removal Sydney (Testimonial #7)

“You were very professional, well dressed, well mannered and quick. I will recommend your services to our friends. Thanks again!”

Michael Witherspoon, Local Resident
Carpet Removal Sydney (Testimonial #14)
“Thanks again boys! really happy with how my shop looks now! i knew ripping out the carpet was the best option, definitely looks a lot better with a clean smooth slab so that i could install a nice hardwood floor”
Paul Grannit, Local Business Owner
Carpet Removal Sydney (Testimonial #8)

“Thanks again for your help guys, I really appreciate you coming so far to do such a small job”

Cary Watson, Tenant of a rental property

“Excellent service from the team at Carpet Removal Sydney. Will definitely use their services again, was absolutely amazed at how much money I saved going through Carpet Removal Sydney instead of going through Carpet Court.”

Lucy Smith, Northern Beaches Resident
Carpet Removal Sydney (Testimonial #13)

“I attempted a carpet removal job my self in my new office only to realise the job was commercially glued down, needless to say as a I.T nerd i had absolutely no chance of removing it haha. I thought i would give a few companys a call to request a quote on how much the removal process would cost… and my god i was shocked at the overwhelming expense of how much commercial carpet removal costs… I was so relieved though when i stumbled across Carpet Removal Sydney (One of my co-workers recently had their team out to remove carpet in a new house they purchased) and was relieved when i finally found a company that was willing to do it for a fair price. I was a little concerned at the start due to their price being so much lower than all of their competitors, but my co-worker re assured me that they had an amazing team. I was quite relieved when the whole process was over and they had done such an amazing job for almost a third of their competitors prices. Thanks again lads! If you ever need a computer fixed hit me up! ”

Peter Stevensons, Home Owner
Carpet Removal Sydney (Testimonial #3)

“The boys at Carpet Removal Sydney also did an absolutely amazing job with the removal as well as the installation of my carpet as well after it was flooded by my dishwasher overnight. Called them up at 6 pm, they were also there the next day and completed the take up the same day! Really happy with the result.”

Hannah Stevenson's, New Home Owner
Carpet Removal Sydney (Testimonial #6)

“I had absolutely no idea what to do when we had a pipe burst in our property, but thankfully Carpet Removal Sydney had a 24-hour emergency assistance team that did an absolutely amazing job with the removal of the carpet that had been completely soaked, called them up at 2 am on a Tuesday and they were here within 30minutes. Couldn’t be happier with their services!”

Sarah Hadley, Sydney Resident

“Can’t argue with cheapest prices, best customer services, and same day service! very impressed!”

Ali Edwards, Newtown Resident
Carpet Removal Sydney (Testimonial #5)

“Was completely gobsmacked at the quotes that I got from 3 other company’s on the northern beaches and how outrageously high they were just to remove the carpet in a shop I had recently purchased. So it was such a relief when my friend recommended I try out Carpet Removal Sydney and I ended up saving over $3,000, Thanks again!”

Olivia Miller, Commercial Shop Owner
Carpet Removal Sydney (Testimonial #4)

“I always recommend Carpet Removal Sydney when a tenant moves out of one of our properties if the carpet needs to be replaced. They always do an amazing job, leave the property clean and save our clients hundreds and sometimes even thousands.”

Scott Turner, Real Estate Agent
Carpet Removal Sydney (Testimonial #11)
“Very impressed with your team members high quality work. You all arrived on time, you did an amazing job finish the removal process and installation process without damaging anything. (My last two experiences with carpet layers from carpet court they both damaged the skirting boards and a piece of furniture) So thanks for giving me faith again that a job can be completed without my property being damaged. And thanks to your team for helping me in such short notice due to my unit having flood damage! Really appreciate everything that you did for me!”
