Self-Levelling Compounds can be used on almost every surface. The application method varies, depending on whether the subfloor is a concrete slab or wooden base. What Is A Liquid Screed?

Ardit Liquid Flowing Screeds are a blend of a binder, special additives, and aggregates, mixed with water to produce a Self Leveling, flowing Screed which can be accurately pumped into place. Liquid Screeds are designed to provide a smooth, level surface before the application of floor finishes or to be polished, ideal for both commercial and domestic buildings. Liquid Flowing Screeds can be used bonded, unbonded, or floating and with or without underfloor heating.

Liquid Screeds have great thermal conductivity and can help spread underfloor heating across the floor, making the build more energy efficient. Easier to level, Liquid Screeds can be set to thin or thick, meaning fewer resources are used and, again, less energy is required during production.

Liquid Screeds Are Best for Extra Strength and Higher Depths
When dealing with floor depths more than 75mm, or for structural floors, Liquid Screeds can recommend the use of a cement-based Liquid Screed solution which can be pumped applied, and laser levelled for a precise floor finish. How thick you can Floor Levelling products depends on the specific product used. Often 1mm – 50mm is the maximum thickness, although products such as Ardex K 900 BF can be applied at a thickness of 90mm. It is also possible after you finish pouring and drying the first layer, to re-prime and apply a second layer to reach a maximum thickness of 120mm.

What Is A Traditional Screed?

Can You Pour Multiple Layers Of Floor Levelling Compounds On Top Of Each Other?

Yes, it is possible to pour multiple layers of Floor Levelling products on top of each other, after the layer has dried, you must prime the dried layer before pouring the second layer. You must ensure you are buying the correct product and following the manufacturer’s guidelines throughout this process.

What Is An Underfloor Heating System?

Underfloor Heating Systems work by distributing a lower temperature of warm water through a circuit of pipes beneath the finished floor. Concrete has a high thermal mass meaning it will store and distribute heat extremely well. Heat is monitored and controlled by intelligent thermostats to maintain a consistent temperature throughout the property or individual zones. Any heat source can be used including conventional boilers and renewable ground/air heat source pumps.

Underfloor Heating Systems will ensure your rooms will stay warm for longer after your heating is switched off than would be the case with a traditional heating system. Can You Install Carpet On Uneven Floors?

For only slightly uneven flooring, sturdy materials such as luxury vinyl plank can also be used for full coverage.

Laying carpet on top of concrete or uneven boards often requires a good-quality underlay that insulates against dampness and heat loss.

Floor Preparation still may be required, such as removing any existing flooring and making sure that the surface is level and free from debris. Is Floor Levelling Required For Installing Floating Floorboards?

Floor Levelling With Flooring Underlay – Whilst underlay is necessary for all floating floors, they were never designed to substitute for Self-Leveling Compound or Concrete Grinding. This is because the underlay will simply follow the shape of the subfloor which is not flat.

Underlayment, or “padding” as it’s often called, is the spongy, closed-cell plastic foam sheet that comes in rolls. It is rolled out between the flooring system and the subfloor.

However, as a general rule of thumb, the subfloor should be flat to within 3mm over a 2-meter radius. If the subfloor is not level, it may be necessary to prepare it before installing the floating floor. This can involve using a Floor Levelling compound or a Self-Leveling Screed to even out any high or low spots.

Why Do I Need My Floors Leveled Before Installing Vinyl?

To ensure a smooth surface for your new flooring, you’ll need to level out any uneven areas in the existing subfloor by filling them in with a Floor Levelling compound.

Vinyl will suffer from surface imperfections or a poor aesthetic appearance if the floor below is not perfectly smooth and level. It is therefore essential to install a Floor Levelling compound to ensure an integrally sound, smooth, and level substrate for the floor covering.

Will I Need Concrete Grinding Service Before Leveling Floors With Self-Levelling Concrete?

Yes, Concrete Grinding is ALWAYS required before Floor Levelling otherwise you WILL NOT get ANY insurance on the installation of our product as it’s most likely going to fail, crack, or popup within a 6-12 month period due to “Floor Preparation” not been done correctly”

You may also require Concrete Grinding before Floor Levelling proceeds if you have previously had flooring systems such as paint, Epoxy, Waterproofing, Magnesite, Vinyl, Lino, Tiles, Glued Carpets, Glue Residues may have been glued or cemented down to your concrete slab as they will have left a residue that will need to be ground away.

As well as anything else that may be still on your concrete or timber subfloor. This will prevent the Floor Levelling agent from bonding correctly with your concrete slab or timber subfloor. So you must grind back or stand back any glues, residues, cement, etc. To ensure that your new Floor Levelling agent will not fail after installation.

If your home was built in the 1920s – 1980s, likely, your home (Especially unit blocks in NSW) could potentially have Magnesite Flooring. Magnesite is present below a flooring system such as carpet. Magnesite is a product used as a noise preventative and a Floor Levelling agent.

Magnesite Flooring absorbs moisture (particularly in areas prone to moisture such as external walls, doorways, around shower recesses, near windows, laundries, etc.) Unfortunately, once Magnesite Flooring absorbs moisture it starts a chemical reaction that will cause Concrete Cancer over long periods.

Because your Magnesite Flooring was laid 40 – 100 years ago, it has likely absorbed moisture over the many decades that it has been trapped under your flooring system and it has most likely started to break down and lose its strength making it an unsuitable Floor Levelling product that it once was, as well as very hollow, which destroys its soundproofing.

There are appropriate products out there, designed to be used on top of tiles, such as “ARDEX K 15” although that does not guarantee any promises. The tiles underneath may slowly delaminate and de-attach from the floor, pushing up the Floor Levelling compound, causing your new flooring system to fail and require removal.
