Why Do I Need My Floors Leveled Before Installing Tiles?

Floor Levelling ensures that your tiles do not pop up, crack or fail within a short period of time. While also following the guidelines of the manufacturers to ensure you receive your warranty.

If your subfloor is not level, you may not be able to install a new flooring system at all. This is common for almost every single flooring system (excluding carpet)

Floor Levelling ensures all the tiles will lay flat during installation, making the tile job smooth and well-bonded to the subfloor. Also, it’s important to plan the layout of the tile floor to avoid making design mistakes, such as a diagonal line running along the wall that should be parallel.

When it comes to tiles It is absolutely essential that the subfloor is completely level. The floor must be flat within 1/8” in 10′ when measured from the high points of the floor. To achieve this, be sure to use the appropriate patch or self-leveling compound (with the same manufacturer’s primer).

If your subfloor is not level, it can lead to misaligned tiles and flaking grout during installation. This is not ideal for any homeowner who wants a perfectly tiled floor. Therefore, Levelling your concrete floor is a key step before starting any tiling project.

Tiles are very durable and will last for decades when properly installed. Any professional tiler can tell you how important a flat surface is for laying down tiles. If your subfloor is not level, it can lead to misaligned tiles and flaking grout during installation. This is not ideal for any homeowner who wants a perfectly tiled floor. Therefore, Levelling your concrete floor is a key step before starting any tiling project

Most tiled floors are installed over a concrete substrate, which is the perfect base for a solid bond. However, concrete often features natural bumps, imperfections, or residues from previously removed flooring systems or coatings on its surface. These bumps or residues can lead to an unevenly tiled floor or a tiled floor failing altogether.

The best way to avoid problems like this is to level your concrete floor before installing tiles. For new floors, utilizing a self-leveling compound will result in a perfectly flat surface, ready for the re-installation of a new flooring system.

For existing concrete floors, you may need to put in a little extra work. Concrete Grinding is often required before Floor Levelling. This will ensure that the starting surface is level enough for your tiling project and that the Floor Levelling product won’t fail.
