So How Can I Protect My Polished Concrete Floors During Renovations?

Always cover the floor with a product durable enough to last through the entire construction process. Ram Board is the most common brand-name product, although there are many similar products sold at specialty construction stores.

We highly recommend that you arrange with your builder to have Ramboard laid 24 hours after your Polished Concrete Floors project is completed. Ramboard is breathable cardboard, and it costs approximately $3.20 per m2. This temporary floor product protects against scratches, chips, and general staining. 

It needs to be breathable so that it doesn’t trap moisture against the slab, but this also means it might still be wet and stains can still occur. We recommend that you take reasonable care whilst the premises are still under construction to prevent stains.

Overall, though, Ramboard is the best protection we have found that actually works and we highly recommend this product to help protect your floor. Another advantage of Ramboard is that it lays out pretty quickly and can help protect against paint, mud, and other contaminants.

If you are having a Nil exposure, industrial look floor (no stone showing), we highly recommend that Ramboard be laid over the slab prior to framing work and before Concrete Polishing.

This is because a Nil exposure finish requires either no grind at all or a very shallow grind, meaning any chips, gouges, scratches or staining cannot be removed by grinding.

Please note that adhesive tapes should never be stuck directly to the concrete either before or after Concrete Polishing, as the adhesive ingredients can damage the Polished Concrete or prevent Concrete Polishing products from penetrating the slab. This can actually end up leaving ‘lines’ in the Polished Concrete.
